Story: My family started coffee production with a small property in São Sebastião do Paraíso with my grandparents, where we lived with my parents and my uncles in 1971. Ten years went by, and my grandparents passed away! My parents and my uncles took over and bought more properties around our farm. In August 1988, I left to study, but after one year, I had to return to the farm to help my father, as he had a health problem and could not manage the farm duties. Unfortunately, in 2012, we lost my father and mother, and my siblings and I, along with my uncles, divided the properties. Today, I have three farms producing coffee in the varieties of Mundo Novo, Catuaí Red, and Yellow Catuaí.

Guatemala is a privileged land for growing coffee, as its geography and climate provides a wide span of coffee profiles.

Los Huipiles is produced by ‘Volcafe’ farmers living in the East of Huehuetenango, between the border of Mexico and the San Marcos department. Volcafe Way, our farmer programme, is active in Guatemala since 2015 and supports around 800 coffee farmers. The program in Huehuetenango started in 2016. Four Field Technicians support the 170 Huehue farmers who have joined the Volcafe Way program. In five years we could already see the impact this programme had for the farmers, their productivity has increased by 20 percent, the quality of the cherries by 5 percent and their costs decreased by 10 percent.
